Professor Wang Peng

Chair Professor and Founding Director of the Institute of Carbon Neutrality and Green Development

Dr. Peng Wang is Chair Professor and Founding Director of the Institute of Carbon Neutrality and Green Development at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), China. He plays an active governance role at SYSU as a member of the University Academic Council and serves as Vice Chair of the Academic Committee for the Faculty of Engineering.

Beyond his institutional duties at SYSU, Dr. Wang holds key editorial roles as Executive Editor and Associate Editor of Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T), a prestigious journal published by the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 1967. He is also Founding Co-President of the International Atmospheric Water Harvesting Association. Notably, he currently serves as a judge for the XPRIZE Water Scarcity, a $119 million USD, 5-year global competition advancing breakthrough seawater desalination innovations (2025-2029). Additionally, he is an expert panel member of the Next Generation Sanitation Systems (NGSS) Program, co-launched by the International Water Association (IWA) and the Gates Foundation.

Previously, Dr. Wang served on the Advisory Committee on Water Supplies in Hong Kong (2022–2024) and acted as Head of Jury for the 2025 Global Prize for Innovation in Water (GPIW).

His research centers on sustainable solutions to water security, as well as the integrated dynamics of the water–energy–food–environment nexus. Dr. Wang is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and has been named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2023 and 2025. His distinguished honors include the 2025 Agilent ACT-UR Award, the 2023 (3rd cycle) Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Water Award, the 2021 Zijin Quanxing Distinguished Alumni Award from Nanjing University, the 2020 Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW), and the 2020 Frontier Research Award from the Chinese-American Professors in Environmental Engineering and Science (CAPEES).
